Fifth Avenue is the heart of Playa del Carmen. One block from the ocean, it holds an appeal for visitors, inviting them to walk up and down its whole length to absorb the real life of Playa (short for Playa del Carmen). Mostly closed to cars to form a pedestrian thoroughfare, it concentrates most of Playa del Carmen's commercial activity.

In Playa del Carmen, there are dozens of restaurants to pick from, bars to refresh yourself with a Margarita or cold beer, and stores where you can look for the right souvenir, shop for clothes, or simply look around and get a feel for the place.

Fifth Avenue (Avenida Quinta) is most active during the night, when the sun has set. The temperature comes down to a nice, cooler level, and Playa del Carmen's tourists are ready to enjoy a night of vacation leisure after spending all day under the sun or exploring the Riviera Maya.

The high concentration of tourist business is the main reason that rents have gone up so high in Playa del Carmen. Since the demand for an available spot to set up a business greatly surpasses the supply, spaces available for rent are remarkably hard to get.

Rents range between $35 up to $150 USD/m2, depending on the location along 5th Avenue and the size of the place. However, most Playa del Carmen business owners find it a necessary expense in order to be on a spot that grants good sales.

Another option for placing a business in Playa del Carmen near 5th Avenue would be the 10th Avenue, one block back and parallel to the ocean. Here the rents are lower, and though certainly 10th is not as popular as 5th Avenue, it provides a good location for certain types of businesses, and it keeps growing commercially every year as well.
